Landscape Fabric Installation

Overview

Landscape fabric is a woven or non-woven barrier laid beneath bark, mulch, or rock that lets water and air through to the soil while blocking weeds from pushing up from underneath. It's most valuable under rock installations in particular, since rock doesn't break down and mix into the soil the way mulch eventually does. Without fabric, rock beds slowly sink and get harder to keep clean over the years.

It's not a permanent, set-it-and-forget-it fix (nothing fully stops weeds forever), but a properly installed layer of fabric meaningfully cuts down on the maintenance a bed needs going forward. We install it as part of new bed builds and rock installations, and it's also a common addition when we're renovating a bed that's been overtaken by weeds and needs a real reset.
